Data Sources
Crop Statistics Survey
Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF)
Prefectural crop area, harvest volume, and shipment data — the core agricultural statistics of Japan. Covers 41 vegetables and 14 fruits.
Regional Specialty Vegetable Production Survey
Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF)
Prefectural area, harvest, and shipment data for 39 specialty vegetables not covered by the main Crop Statistics Survey — including shiso (green perilla), okra, bitter melon, zucchini, bell pepper (paprika), and moroheiya. Published biennially.
Special Forest Products Production Statistics
Forestry Agency (MAFF)

Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF)
Monthly volume and price data from central wholesale markets across Japan.
Marine Fisheries Production Statistics Survey
Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF)
Prefectural catch volume (wild fisheries) and harvest volume (marine aquaculture) by species — the core fisheries statistics for Japan.
Marine Product Distribution Survey
Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF)
Monthly cold-storage inflow volumes for frozen seafood products by species. Used as a supply-signal proxy for species without published monthly wholesale prices.
Family Income and Expenditure Survey

Annual household expenditure by ingredient category and prefectural capital city. Covers fresh vegetables, fruits, and seafood.
Retail Price Survey

Standard Tables of Food Composition in Japan — 2020 (8th Revision)
Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT)
Nutritional composition per 100g of edible portion: energy, protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and more.
Meteorological Statistics
Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA)
Climate normals (temperature, precipitation, sunshine hours) from observation stations across Japan.
National Land Numerical Information
Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT)
Administrative boundary GIS data (GeoJSON format).
Data Processing
- Production data is derived from MAFF Crop Statistics (vegetables/fruits), Forestry Agency Special Forest Products Production Statistics (mushrooms), and MAFF Marine Fisheries Production Statistics (seafood, wild + aquaculture combined), ranked by prefectural harvest/catch volume per item.
- Seafood prefecture rankings reflect landing ports, not catch origins — Yaizu (Shizuoka) for katsuo/tuna, Kesennuma (Miyagi) for katsuo, etc. Deep-sea catches landed at these hubs are attributed to the landing prefecture.
- Nutrition values are per 100g of edible portion from the MEXT Standard Tables of Food Composition (8th Revision). Actual values vary by cultivar, origin, and preparation method.
- Retail prices are national averages from the Statistics Bureau Retail Price Survey. Actual prices vary by region, store, and season.
- Seasonality is independently classified by Minolier based on domestic open-field production periods.
