Peanuts
Chiba is 1st nationally in peanut production value for the 2023 crop. Yachimata City, Tomisato City, and Asahi City are the main production areas, and the sandy soil and mild marine climate are suitable for cultivating in-shell peanuts. Cultivars are diverse, such as Chiba Handachi (peanut), Q Nuts (peanut), and Omasari (peanut), and boiling raw peanuts is a popular way to eat the large-grained Omasari in the production areas. During the autumn harvest season, tourists can also enjoy digging them.
Choshi Sardines and Mackerel
Choshi Fishing Port has one of the highest landing volumes in Japan, and sardines, mackerel, and tuna are landed there. The Japanese pilchard specifically has the largest scale of landing volume in Japan, and is distributed nationwide as processed products such as canned food, dried fish, and anchovies. Winter mackerel is fatty, and is evaluated highly in the Tokyo metropolitan area markets as fresh fish sent directly from Choshi.
Spinach and Turnip (Suburban Vegetables)
Chiba utilizes the short logistics distance to the Tokyo metropolitan area to ship multi-item leafy and root vegetables such as spinach, Turnip, Green Onion / Negi, and komatsuna year-round. Spinach is evaluated for its autumn/winter cold-tightened products which increase in sweetness, and Turnip from production areas around Matsudo and Ichikawa is stably supplied to markets in Tokyo. The proximity of the production areas leads to the maintenance of freshness, gathering consumer support.
Climate & Agriculture of Chiba
Chiba is located in the southeastern part of the Kanto region and has a peninsular topography surrounded by the sea on three sides. Influenced by the Pacific Ocean, Tokyo Bay, and the Kujukuri Beach coast, a relatively mild climate is maintained even in winter. The annual average temperature is around 15 to 16°C and there are few days with frost, making it an environment suitable for greenhouse and open-field cultivation of winter and spring vegetables. In the vast farmland spanning the Kujukuri Plain and the Shimosa Plateau, suburban agriculture has developed, taking advantage of its proximity to the Tokyo metropolitan area, a large consumption area. In the Pacific coastal areas around Choshi City and Asahi City, peanut cultivation is prominent, utilizing the sea breeze and sandy soil, and Chiba maintains 1st nationally in peanut production value for the 2023 crop. On the other hand, Choshi Fishing Port has one of the highest landing volumes in Japan in 2023 as well, and marine products such as sardines, mackerel, tuna, and splendid alfonsino are shipped nationwide. In the inland areas around Ichihara City and Togane City, in addition to paddy rice and wheat, multi-item vegetable production such as spinach, Green Onion / Negi, and Turnip is carried out throughout the year. Even in suburban areas such as Matsudo City and Ichikawa City, small-scale farmland is maintained, and direct sales stores for local production and consumption are scattered.

Agricultural Profile of Chiba
The specificity of Chiba's food industry lies in a dual-axis structure where both agriculture and fisheries rank high nationally at the same time. Peanuts, an agricultural product specialized for processing and gift purposes, and the fishery industry centered on Choshi Fishing Port act as the two wheels of the production area's economy, and they form a complementary relationship where one covers for the other even during seasonally sluggish periods. Geographically, the peninsular topography surrounded by the sea on three sides creates a mild marine climate, and the short straight-line distance to Tokyo, a large consumption area, directly connects to a logistics advantage. From the perspective of suburban agriculture, small-scale farmland is dispersed within urban areas such as Matsudo, Ichikawa, and Funabashi, serving as a testing ground for new agricultural models such as direct sales and CSA with local residents. On the other hand, there is also an ongoing issue of converting farmland to residential land, and securing the next generation of farmers has become an important theme related to the sustainability of the production areas. The geographical condition of being the agricultural and fishing prefecture closest to the large consumption area continues to be the fundamental strength of Chiba's food industry.
